Back-to-School Budget: Have Your Kids Help You Pay

As I interviewed a mom yesterday about how she budgets for back to school for an article on MainStreet.com, it brought back memories of how my parents did back to school budgeting (something similar). I still pick out my son's clothes, but he'll soon be interested in doing his own shopping, and I think having him pitch in to help pay for it is a good thing.

Miranda - I love this topic! My parents did the same thing. I'm curious though... how old do you think a child should be to start this? My son is six-years old and that seems a bit too young.

My son will be 7 in a couple of months, and he's not quite ready. I agree that 6 is a bit young. I think that kids between 5 and 8 or 8 can be helped along by having you come along and set up either or situations. Let them choose between clothes. Happily, though, most kids under 9 are fine letting you do a lot of helping. Of course, it depends on age, some kids are ready earlier. But I think it's about gauging their maturity level. From 9-12 I'd probably still do some supervising, like handing over the money and bringing a long a calculator, maybe.

@Miranda - that sounds good. I just finished school shopping with my son and he had absolutely no interest in any part of it. He really didn't care. But I do like the idea of him paying for things he "wants" when he gets older.

My kids don't get new clothes- we are a hand me down family. We are blessed with great quality hand me downs most peoople would not realise this. They do buy their own toys or special items so they learn the money stuff that way.

Cindy - How lucky you are! I didn't spend a lot on clothes for my son this school year... he's a six-year-old boy. He doesn't care about clothes and kids grow so quickly it really is a waste of money. I think I'm going to start taking the clothes he outgrows to consignments stores.
