It's one thing to have lots of options for many photos of your children; it's another entirely when you can start getting blemishes airbrushed out.
Am I off-base in thinking school photos have gotten out of control?

Yeah, I think it is a bit nuts that we're to the point of airbrushing school pics. It really says a lot about our society's strange obsession with perfection. And it teaches our children to strive for a version of physical perfection that may not be possible. Also baffling to me: The fact that my school has two picture days. There will be another one in the spring. Remember when you just had one picture taken at the beginning of the year?

Totally agree. My kids came home with exactlty the same package and I could not believe that they were offering "airbrushing" for an extra fee. Also, my kid's school take pictures four times yes you heard well four times per school year..

Amy - you crack me up *shaking my cane"! I agree with you... they count on parents wanting all these "extras" because how could you not want all of these things with your child's face on it. We had keychains and coffee mugs, etc. to choose from. The airbrushing is ridiculous! Liza - 4 times a year is crazy! My son's school does school pictures twice and then they do a class picture once. And I think that's too much. I think they shoul do school pictures once a year closer to the end of the school year.

@Miranda - yes, we do have two sets of class pictures here, too, for some reason. I don't get it either. @Liza - FOUR? That's insane. Just. In. Sane. @Donna - yes, we also had all the extras to choose from, too. I just got so caught up in the insanity of airbrushing that I forgot to comment about it. Excuse me, I must go shake my cane on the porch now.

It's a loaded subject for sure, and thanks for vlogging it. A couple years ago, when I first saw the request not to send my child to school on picture day "wearing green" I was kinda surprized. Not wear green on picture day? Our kids have red hair and they look awesome in green. What was all this about...? Green-screen backdrop of course, easier to key out and plop in the bg of your choice: autumn leaves, ivy, fireplace, brick wall... (brick wall?? yep). If your kid has curly or wispy hair, the colour key is always badly done around the edges, resulting in your kid looking like they aren't actually in front of all those leaves/ivy/fireplace/bricks. For me, school pics should reflect the reality of what you are born with: no cheating allowed. Besides, airbrush technique is highly specialized - if they get it wrong, it can look really tacky. Ultimately, it's dishonest, and that bothers me. Having said that, I just had a real close look at my grandparents' passport photos from 1952. The lovely hi-lights in their eyes are obviously 'painted' on. Aaag.
