How many times have you driven past the ubiquitous golden arches and had to deal with your children demanding a cheeseburger?
How do you deal with the issue? Sure, it can be as simple as putting your foot down, but with children it's never simple.

I just say no, sometimes. We make it clear that fast food is a once in a while treat, and not something regular. We plan it out to go, and rarely go spontaneously. If my son asks to go just because we're driving by, I simply say "No. We'll go some other time."

Amy - I have to admit to eating fast food or picking up a pizza a little too much if we are having a busy week. For example, if I am volunteering at his school and he has practice the same day - I may pick up something because it is more convenient. I'm not proud of it, but it's hard if you are running in and out of the house all day to get a hot meal on the table. So when school is in session this can happen 2 - 3 times a week.

Amy, a few years ago, I realized that we were popping in and out of fast food places as often as once a month. It got to be ridiculous! Plastic toys were junking up the house, and food with poor nutritional value was junking up the kids. I fully understand the picky eater syndrome. I have one as well. Honestly, we just stopped going cold turkey. Sometimes there isn't much of an option, so once or twice a year, while on a long road trip, we might pop in for chicken nuggets, apples, and a plain milk, but it is very rare. It didn't take long before the kids stopped asking. Honestly, they eat far healthier and diverse foods now that junk isn't an option. They have even grown to love it! (The older one chose to bring edamame to a pot luck for scouts. He thought it would be cool to introduce his favorite to his friends.)

OK, for me it tends to be a financial situation. My kids know if I have worked a lot this month-I am more likely to get them something. We rarely get happy meals and usually eat it at home with our own drinks and share a small fries between all of us. My kids eat very well, so they do not need to worry about it. I feel that they are better able to bounce back from fast food than we adults are. I learned to make my own fries-baked in the oven with spices and a drop of olive oil- and the kids love them. But it still is a big deal when we do anyfood not made by Mom!

Cindy - we rarely get kids meals. My son is a picky eater and doesn't like McDonalds. He will eat the chicken tenders from BK and Wendys. His favorite fast food is Chik-Fil-A. We tend to go in spells - like there will be 1 - 2 weeks where we are running around from here to there and it's just easier to pick up Subways, Chik-Fil-A or Little Caesars (our 3 faves). We also go weeks where we don't eat any fast food at all. What's so funny is my son really isn't crazy about fast food... his favorite restaurant is a local buffet restaurant - he loves their macaroni and cheese.
